Benjamin died less than a month later, weighing only 28 pounds
He was reportedly forced to drink hand sanitizer and eat breadcrumbs off the bathroom floor without using his hands
The fridge and cabinets were padlocked to prevent him from getting food
His father and stepmom, Miranda Casarez, told police he caused his own injuries
Officer Omar Perez testified that Benjamin “had visible injuries” and was “skinny… you could see his bones”
Perez added: ‘He had bruises on his eyes and torso and he was skinny … able to see his bones’
EMS called to the scene checked Benjamin’s vitals and said they were normal
Perez told the court he was told to call child protective services and fill out a report
He said he’d been told that would lead to an investigation of what was happening to Benjamin at a later date
